BEIJING: China's Supremesju`pri:m最高的 People's Court 最高人民法院said Tuesday that it had approved the death sentence against Akmal Shaikh, a British man who was convicted 被判……罪行smuggling走私 drugs into China.
Shaikh, 53, male, was caught carrying up to 4,030 grams of heroin at the international airport of Urumqi in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous from Dushanbe, capital of Tajikstan on the morning of September 12, 2007.
He was sentenced to death in the first instance trial by the Intermediate People's Court 中级人民法院of Urumqi on October 29, 2008 and his final verdict判决 came in October after two failed appeals上诉.
China's Criminal Law刑法 stipulates 规定that people trafficing more than 50 grams of heroin could be sentenced to death.
BEIJING - Chinese court's sentence of death penalty死刑 on a British drug trafficker贩毒分子 is in line with符合 Chinese laws, said a spokesman for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.
Akmal Shaikh, 53, male, was sentenced to death in the first instance trial by the Intermediate People's Court of Urumqi Municipality in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on October 29, 2008, said Ma Zhaoxu, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at a regular news briefing.
The case is currently being reviewed by China's Supreme People's Court, Ma said.
"All the procedures程序 have been in line with relevant相关的 Chinese laws. During the trial审判, The accused被告 and the counsel 律师had freely exercised their rights of defense, and translation service had ben provided to the accused. His legal rights had been fully guaranteed," he said.
According to Ma, the British embassy大使馆 in China and a British organization had proposed to organize mental disease精神病 examinations on Akmal Shaikh, while offering no evidence that he may be suffering from mental disease.
The accused had said that he and his family members had no history of mental diseases, Ma said.
The case is under examination, he said.
