Halifax Location and DescriptionLocated in south central Nova Scotia on one of the world's largest deepwater, ice-free harbours, Halifax is Nova Scotia's commercial, educational, and political capital.​Halifax owes its very existence to the harbour. A chief British military base in the seventeen and eighteen hundreds and a vital naval supply link for the Allied effort in World War II, Halifax earned the nickname "Warden of the North". Even today the harbour plays an important role, as modern-day frigates, container ships, cruise liners and fishing boats ply its busy waters.The Citadel, a restored 1828 British fortress, is the city's focal point, rising above the downtown on a large hill overlooking the harbour. Cobblestone streets and restored warehouses that date back to the 1700s make up Historic Properties, a picturesque cultural and entertainment district on the waterfront. For much of the summer a wharf at Historic Properties berths the Bluenose 2, a replica of the famous Nova Scotia racing schooner depicted on the Canadian dime.

Halifax Climate:Halifax weather tends to be warmer than inland Nova Scotia due to the moderating effect of the Atlantic Ocean. Summer temperatures typically fall between 21-26°C. Fog rolling in from the ocean often blankets the city in the early morning and evening. Winter temperatures average -8 to 0°C, with snow frequently turning to rain.

Halifax Economy:As a capital city and home to two military bases , federal, provincial and municipal government are Halifax's single largest employers. The Port of Halifax is Canada's busiest east coast port handling over 14 million tons of cargo annually. Halifax is also a centre for research and higher education, home to Dalhousie University, St. Mary's University, the Techinical University of Nova Scotia, Mount Saint Vincent University and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. The Bedford Institute is one of the world's largest centres for ocean study.Recent discoveries off the coast of Nova Scotia have lead to off shore oil development and Halifax real estate has been booming as a result. The development has lead to job creation both on and off shore for Halifax residents.

Halifax Culture and Recreation:If you are moving to Halifax for the first time, you may be wondering what there is to do in this small city of 300,000+ residents. Fortunately the answer to this questions is a lot. Halifax boasts an exciting cultural scene with a variety of festivals, museums, galleries, theatres, pubs and nightclubs. Historic Properties is the city's entertainment hot spot, home to The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, charming restaurants with a harbour view, trendy pubs and a waterfront casino. Every summer jugglers and magicians perform at Historic Properties and throughout the city as part of the Halifax International Busker Fest. The Bunker Festival bring entertainers from around the world and it livens-up the whole waterfront of Halifax.Theatre lovers enjoy a variety of performances year-round including plays at Halifax's Neptune Theatre, the Cohen Auditorium, various dinner theatres and Shakespeare in the Park, at Point Pleasant Park. The Metro Centre is host to a variety of large scale events including concerts and sporting events. Halifax offers it's residents year around activities giving the feeling of excitement like a much larger city with the comfort of the smaller community.

喂，请问是中国移动吗？我是中国联通，我的小灵通坏了，你们能派中国铁通来修一下吗？ 超赞 赏 反馈:鲁智深 J jasmine-qlq 0$(VIP 0) 1,0462006-06-05#7 写给想来Halifax的朋友:Halifax是个小城市，人口37万，安静祥和。这边的人际关系宽松友善，比Vancouver或者Toronto要好得多--如果你去过这些大城市的话，多多少少你会感觉到当地人的歧视，虽然不是很明显。这里的语言环境很不错，本地人占多数，你可以很容易交到本地朋友，因此语言能力应该可以提高很快。但是就业机会相对大城市要少得多，想有一份稳定的工作恐怕不是很容易。另外该省收入税要比安省，BC和Alberta都要高，可能要高出3%-10% 。所以来这里的朋友要做好多给政府免费打工的准备。大学的教育环境：一共三所大学。Saint Mary's University, Dalhousie University 和 Mount Saint Vincent University，此外还有一个NSCAD是技术学院，现在也叫大学了。SMU面积很小，四条街一围，中间的就是校园，商科在当地小有名气，例如会计和MBA。此外生物地理地质也不错。但是仅限于本省而言，出了Nova Scotia只怕就没几个人知道了。Dal是大西洋四省中最好的大学，工程，计算机科学以及法学很有名望。学校建筑群比较分散，感觉上东一座西一座，教学楼零零星星分布在halifax半岛的最南端。学术气氛比SMU浓一些，经常有各种各样的seminar。但是computer science的master被盘剥严重，没有全奖还要给教授打工的大有人在，而且学费昂贵，另外一个教授带10好几个学生的情况屡见不鲜。从这方面来说，SMU做的比它强，学费低，有全奖，教授对学生1：1，最多也就1：3，但是SMU每个科系的教授都很少，能招的学生十分有限。MSVU了解不多，面积比SMU大，但地段很偏，在Halifax的北端，人迹稀少。听说food science不错，读这个专业的本地人很多，而且有不错的Internship。生活费用方面：房价攀升很快，但比多伦多等大城市还是要低廉，所以买房还不错，17w可以买到一套不错的condo，买套能住的house就要25w左右了。可是租房的价格和大城市差不多，在downtown夫妻合租得要600以上，除非是dalhousie的夫妻楼（557/month）。一般买菜去sobey和superstore。Springgarden周围也开了一家超市，偏贵，但有些前面两家超市买不到的水果和蔬菜。伙食不太好，很多中国的蔬菜这里买不到或者很贵，而且价格比Vancover要高出2到3倍。例如一lb橙子在Vancouver才卖6毛加币，这边要卖到1.3到2块。downtown的中国杂货店只有两家--加华和88，加华地段不错，靠近sobey和superstore，但是卖的贵，而且老板娘很凶。88是个大陆的留学生jj开的，很和气，经常和人拉家常，挺亲切，价格比加华也便宜些。对了，周日这里的大部分商店都关门。所以买菜可别在这天了。上海东方电视台的枫叶国之旅纪录片就是从Halifax开始，一路开车到温哥华。里面把Halifax称作加拿大的香格里拉呢。Halifax是加拿大第二温暖的地方，而且春天很漂亮，所以还是不错的^^
