Cops to ride NE rails Officers to patrol from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. five days a week

New patrols will be on board trains and patrolling platforms and parking lots from 7 a.m to 2 a.m. five days a week. Security on northeast LRT lines has been beefed up, with the addition of safety patrols from early morning to late at night. Calgary police and protective services personnel will patrol along 36 Street corridor from the Max Bell station to the McKnight-Westwinds station. Acting Inspector Jim Leung told Metro the new patrol is aimed at making Calgarians feel safer while riding city transit. "People are telling us they don’t feel safe while riding and whether that is perception or statistics, I can’t say but they will definitely see an impact and it will make a difference," Leung said. Ten full-time police officers from districts four and five will patrol the parking lots, platforms and train stations and will even be jumping inside of the trains. "They will be looking for criminal activities in and around the stations and will be providing a visible police presence," Leung said, adding they won’t be there to look for unpaid fares. The officers will regularly ride and patrol the C-train between 7 a.m. and 2 a.m., five days a week. Protective Services manager Stephen Hansen said Calgary Police Service approached them with the idea and they were happy to accept the offer. "What we’re hearing from our riders is that they don’t feel safe and we feel like this is a joint effort that our riders will appreciate. We know our officers always wish there were a few more out there too," Hansen said. Transit rider Sally, who didn’t wish to use her last name, told Metro she is wary of riding the train along the northeast leg, especially having to use it at night. "I see all kinds of scary people around here at all times, but at night is the worst. It is scary and I hope this helps keep some of these guys away," she said. In 90 days the police will review the new program and make any necessary changes. In the future they might look into adding mountain bike patrol.评论
