John Pope, who claimed to work as an editor and political staffer in Canada years ago, was shot by police before turning the gun on himself, according to the National Bureau of Investigation. He died from his wounds. A criminal complaint of malicious mischief against Pope that was filed by his former neighbour, a pediatric surgeon, brought the three men to the Palace of Justice courtroom in Cebu City. In documents sent to local media last year, and now shared with the Toronto Star, Pope said he was born in Minnesota and attended university in the United States. Later, he said he studied journalism at Ottawa’s Carleton University but didn’t finish a degree before working as an editor. A Carleton spokesman said someone by the same name took 8 ½ credits there. Manitoba’s Progressive Conservative party also said a John Pope worked for the party during the ’90s, although it was unclear whether it was as a researcher and speech writer, as Pope claimed. The glimpses of his Canadian life, before he said he obtained a Philippines visa 15 years ago, are buried in pages of letters sent to reporters last year in which he made allegations against the government and neighbour Dr. Rene Rafols. Pope accused Rafols of stealing condo funds and being connected to a deportation order against him last year after his retiree visa expired. On his pending deportation, Pope wrote: “I said this was ridiculous because I had lived here continuously for 14 years . . . with no connection whatsoever in Canada.” “We couldn’t really do much with (the letters),” said a journalist based in Cebu, a central vacation spot, speaking on condition of anonymity. Local media did mention Pope, who would have turned 67 on Wednesday, when police held him on firearms charges in 2011. He said at the time that he had the weapons for self-defence. On Tuesday, the Canadian was wearing jogging pants and a long white sweatshirt when he entered the court at around 8:10 a.m., according to a NBI police report obtained by the Star. Recent violence in the Philippines has sparked calls for a tighter gun control and a security guard told police that Pope was frisked and had his bag searched on his way in.A few minutes after court began, “two successive gun” bursts were heard. A witness saw Rafols and his lawyer, Jubian Achas, lying dead on the ground, according to the report. Pope then left the courtroom and shot a prosecutor, who was left in critical condition, the report said. Canadian Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Amanda Reid said officials are in direct contact with local authorities and are assisting the Canadian’s family. “Our deepest sympathies are with those affected by the terrible event in the Philippines,” she said.点击展开...评论
