Brand ManagerI was working as a project manager in Papermate's facility in China, more that 10 years ago.
I work with R&D in Oakbrook, which is a facility belongs to Sanford/Newell Rubbermaid. When joined, both parties is on the middle of a hot item Sharpie UF RT.
A team from America came, very strong team. I met my counterpart, Brand manager，engineers...
I was new with consumer product, and when I exchange card with U.S. brand manager I even asked quite a few questions, but still I am not certain about their functions.
But it is not an issue, I didn't work with directly.
One weekend I was on a train from Shenzhen to Dongguan, back to home. I met a HK guy who lived in same community and although we don't know each other but our kids are at the same age so we are familiar in some way. We talked about our employer and in fact I actually wear the smock. That man saw the papermate logo in the smock and shouted out, "Papermate, you work in papermate?!" I nodded and opened my mouth and tried to speak out in chinese 比百美. but he waved his hand and said, "don't say it, I know it. I use papermate 40 years ago when I was a junior school student. Papermate is very famous at that time, but nowadays Pilot is more popular...I know it, it is right in my mouth" I was a little bit surprised, but that man began to think it over, I can see this from his eyes. I believed he just entered into the past times and re-playing something.
Train stopped, minutes later we entered into our community and he kept thinking all the way. We are going to split, he actually lived in the building that is only 50 meters away from mine. "比百美" and while he said so, he twinkled his eyes a couple times as if to say, "I told you, I know it!", he said it clear and loud with proud! And he entered into his building.
I was then stand still for a couple seconds. Suddenly I understood everything. I catch the real meaning of brand manager.
All the people is the brand managers as long as she/he is involved. You are me, whoever they are, including the guard in our facility. We are the ones who are doing everything we can do to make sure everything is moving properly, on time or beyond customers' expectations, with a fair and reasonable cost, low return rate, everything you can image. If the guard got drunk and I in turn lost my samples that need to send to US overnight can I tell my counterpart that someone just step in and take the samples away, I don't know who and but will certainly work this out...
For some reason I never meet that guy again. He lived mainly in HK! But I have something in my mind, how to bring this to all the people. And I will make an advertising clip one day.
One sunday morning, I walked downstairs with a couple papermate pens in my hands.
I knocked the door of neighbor building, inside a little girl is working on his homeworks, she is not happy, it is weekend, how come should I working on this boring stuffs, but he lives in China there is nothing I can do. Both inside and outside is in a dark.
That HK guy opened the door, he can barely recognize me, and I hand over the pens. He looked at them with surprising and in just one second he opened his mouth wide and wanted to shout out that name.
Then I speak out, gentlely, "yes you know the name, you have proofed this 10 years ago. Someone I work with previously in papermate sent me this, that I hope you will like it.
Then that little girl runs close and grab one of them, just like a wind, "what is this?"
“Papermate， I use this brand when I was your age!”
"Papermate" little girls Innocent voice spread over just like the spring bell, lightened the inside, then that voice moved to to the outside, and sun comes shining everything is cheared up.
Hold it just for a few seconds, let that bell spread to every corners in the world, just let it speading. then the lens moves back quickly to the barrel of the pen that is holding and lift highly by that little girl in her little hand! Just forget the all the peoples just focus on that pen.
Then just make sure the cameraman will take this, that 2 heart shape logo, and that name "papermate"! Let's try to make this moment for ever
