Jana McGuinness said the man was killed shortly after 6:30 p.m. as he sat in his van in the 300 block of Carrall Street at Hastings Street. His death marks the city's sixth homicide of the year.

But witnesses at the scene said they saw about six bullet holes on the driver's side of the van, and a screaming woman cradling the dead man in her lap."A woman was holding the body and crying and screaming 'No, this can't be happening,'" said photographer Lili Yakub, who arrived minutes after the shooting. The area was clogged with onlookers before police blocked off Carrall at Hastings. The body, wrapped in a sheet, was still lying on the sidewalk about three hours later.The street was expected to be closed for several hours tonight, McGuinness said, as forensics officers combed the area for clues. She said several witnesses were also being interviewed.A few blocks away, police also cordoned off Cambie between Cordova and Hastings and posted police guards at the gated entrance of a Mexican restaurant at the northwest corner of the Dominion Building.Witnesses said they saw police cars racing down to Cambie shortly after the shooting, but McGuinness would not say if the two police incidents were related, saying only: "We have an operation going on up at Cambie Street."
