回复: 《白鲸Moby Dick》里的一句话类似的：The administration of a strong sleeping draught to the condemned man every night from which one night he does not awake, seems a more civilized alternative to our present barbarous procedure, if capital punishment through the influence of backward minds be retained.看来if capital punishment through the influence of backward minds (should) be retained.中的should给省略了；though many there be who have tried it. 正常语序应该为：though many (should) there be who have tried it → though there (should) be many who have tried it. 这两者都是虚拟语气，不知道理解的对吗？
