The United States on Thursday reiterated its willingness to hold direct talks with Iran to speed up understanding on reviving the nuclear deal, but Iran demanded "strong guarantees" to move the Vienna talks to a stage where a firm agreement can be reached.The State Department says the United States is willing to meet directly with the Iranians because that is the best way to negotiate a nuclear dealIn response to questions from Al Jazeera, the State Department said that meeting directly with the Iranians would open up more room for communication, which is necessary to accelerate understanding on the full resumption of the nuclear deal.
The State Department added that given the pace of Iran's nuclear progress, time was almost running out to reach an understanding for the two sides to resume the agreement simultaneously.The State Department also expressed regret that the opportunity was missed without direct talks to resolve differences.
The developments reflect the US willingness to hold direct negotiations. State Department spokesman Ned Price told a news briefing that the US had not made the release of the four Americans a condition for the two countries reaching an agreement to fully revive the Iran nuclear deal.
