In China, citizenship and passport processing offices are located in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Applicants are recommended to apply at the nearest Canadian office. Canadian parents of a child born overseas can apply for a Canadian Citizenship Card for their biological offspring if, at the time of birth, at least one of the parents has Canadian citizenship. The family ? parents and child ? is to make an application, in person at the Consular office, for a Citizenship Card after the birth of the child. All original documents have to be presented at the time of application and will be returned to the applicants. Please note that the issuance of a Citizenship Card can take up to 12 months, therefore, parents are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible. The form to download is: Application for a Citizenship Certificate (Proof of Citizenship) Under Section 3 [Form CIT 0001]. All Canadian citizens, regardless of age, are now required to have their own passports. To facilitate travel during the period where the family is waiting for the Citizenship Card, the parents can obtain a limited validity Canadian Passport for the new-born. Any issuance of the passport before the citizenship card granted would be based on a valid reason, with proof, for example if it’s to facilitate travel then the air ticket or booking confirmation needs to be presented, or if it’s for visa concerns then a statement from applicant with explanation on details is required. If this is the case, the family will encounter difficulties obtaining a Chinese exit visa in the Canadian passport. Parents are advised to speak to the Entry and Exit Administration of the Public Security Bureau for more information. We encourage applicants to carefully review the application forms to ensure all fields are completed correctly. Canadians should ensure that translations are available for all original documents issued in Chinese. Finally, clients are reminded that the requirements outlined in the packages are basic components that must be submitted in order for our office to process the applications. Incomplete packages will not be processed until all required supporting documents are submitted. The Consular offices overseas may also ask for additional supporting documentation should the original packages be incomplete or if there are discrepancies in the information provided.
